It’s been one year since millions of women and people of all backgrounds took to the streets to demonstrate their frustration, sadness, anger, and power during the first Women’s March. This year, SEIU-West is proud to march in the second Women’s March taking place on January 20th in Saskatoon, Regina, and around the world.
Last year’s Women’s March saw over 5 million marchers on all seven continents, making it the largest coordinated protest in U.S. history and one of the largest in world history. And the influence that this march has had is unmistakable.
The #MeToo movement launched an international discussion on sexual violence and harassment. Known as the ‘Silence Breakers’ the #MeToo voices were named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. By the end of 2017, we saw the launch of ‘Times Up’ which is an organization offering support for those experiencing sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace. These steps have been crucial because 1 in 3 women aged 18-34 have been sexually harassed at work – and 71% of the women experiencing harassment did not report it. Times Up lets our communities know that the clock has run out for those who harass. The message is simple: Time’s Up on the imbalance of power.
The next Women’s March will undoubtedly take further steps to challenge patriarchy and work towards women’s equality. We hope you can join, and be sure to wear purple! If you need flags, please contact the Saskatoon Office: 306.652.1011 or Moose Jaw Office (for Regina’s March): 306.693.7922.
