Important Information on Upcoming Elections for Unit Executives

This fall, unit elections will be held for SEIU-West representatives.

Naturally, as the fall elections approach, there have been some specific questions regarding the roles and expectations of the Union leaders who will assign the unit executive and shop steward role.

We have developed outlines of the roles and expectations of each position: Unit ChairVice-Chairperson, and Workplace Communicator.

This is not meant to be a comprehensive list or meant to exclude anything. Also, this is work that unit executive offices already do in one way or another.

Some of you may wish to add additional positions to assist you in the work required in your Unit.

As we head into what feels like the deepest part of winter, there is good news to report across SEIU-West and the union movement.

Bargaining:

· South East Cornerstone School Division has settled their collective agreement.

This wasn’t an easy task for the members or the bargaining committee as they brought together 3 collective agreements into one and includes a monetary settlement that addresses parity, retro and general wage increases. There are numerous language improvements for these members as well. Congratulations to the membership and bargaining committee for their solidarity and hard work in getting a collective agreement!

Happy New Year to all – I hope that you all enjoyed a restful and relaxing festive holiday.

This is the first of regular updates to the units and members of SEIU-West.

Regular membership meetings are difficult, if not impossible, to hold now that we are a province-wide local. However, at the Unit Chair meeting last fall, a request was made asking us to provide regular updates to the Unit Chairs as a proposed improvement in how we all work together and communicate within our union.

The first thing I want to do is congratulate members & staff who have settled collective agreements this past year:
