MEDIA RELEASE: Residents of Rose Villa Deserve Safe Care

For Immediate Release – March 11, 2015

Saskatoon – The leaders and members of SEIU-West were distressed by the allegations centred on their union in the CTV news story regarding empty beds at Rose Villa, a long-term care facility, in Rosetown, Saskatchewan.

“Nothing could be further from reality than the comment made by Ms. Minish in the story,” said Barbara Cape, President of SEIU-West. “She claimed that the ‘administration is restricted and controlled by the Union’ at Rose Villa. The truth is that SEIU-West has been both collaborative and supportive of the efforts to fill vacant staff positions so as to extend operations to full capacity. One of our unit leaders from Rose Villa, Colleen Denniss, recently participated in career fairs in Moose Jaw, Regina and Saskatoon where she actively made a pitch for graduates to consider recruitment in this community, among others. SEIU-West sponsored this attendance.”

Shelly Banks, Vice-President of SEIU-West and a full-time Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) at Rose Villa, takes exception to the story and added: “It is regrettable that the general public does not know the many reasons for our current dilemma. Our members are giving up vacation time and work crushing overtime hours in order to fill vacant shifts. It is an anomaly when we come to work and have full baseline staffing; working short has become the norm.”

“Let’s be clear, this is not what our union wants at all,” continued Banks. “We welcome full-time jobs and we remind the employer when jobs remain un-posted. The problems of Rose Villa cannot be blamed on the very people who are struggling each day to meet the care needs of the 48 residents who currently live at our facility.”

“We agree that Rose Villa is challenged with retention and recruitment issues. While we have actively promoted timely posting and filling of vacancies at this facility, there is a shortage of available candidates for these positions here and elsewhere in the province,” added Cape. “We share the frustration of not having all the beds open and we want the shortage of care providers addressed. However, we must all realize that it is irresponsible and unsafe to open beds when we have insufficient hands-on care providers to deliver the quality, compassionate and timely care our residents deserve.”

President’s Message: Where to Vote and Why

For the majority of our healthcare membership, we have a very important vote on a tentative collective agreement coming up on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. The vote will be held in facilities across the province and in the SEIU-West union offices in Moose Jaw, Swift Current and Saskatoon. You can vote at any facility where it is most convenient for you…but you need to vote!

Some members have been pleased with the tentative agreement (TA) and some have been critical of the provisions negotiated. Both are legitimate reactions, but the SEIU-West Bargaining Committee felt that this was the time to put the decision in the hands of our membership. Ultimately, this decision will be made by those members who show up and vote their preference. This is why we have produced the TA and this is why we had our array of meetings to explain the contents. We want our members to know what they are voting on. If you have questions, we urge you to ask them.  Please call the Member Resource Centre (MRC) at 1-888-999-7348 or use the Contact Us form on the website.

Some members have asked why CUPE members are taking a strike vote. I cannot answer that question on their behalf. What I can tell you is that the CUPE agreement, the SEIU-West agreement and the SGEU agreement are all different collective agreements. There were different language priorities for each union and there were different concessions demanded from each of the three unions.

We continue to support our brothers and sisters in CUPE and SGEU. We have lobbied government to drop the concessions demanded of our sister unions; we have asked for the withdrawal of the ‘work for pay’ provision being demanded of our sister unions; and we will work with them no matter what the results of our vote or their votes are.

This ratification vote is important – this is your chance to participate in setting the workplace rules for all of us (the union membership and the employer representatives) for the next 3 years. Take the time to come out and mark your decision on your ballot in the vote on Tuesday, January 21 in the SEIU-West ratification vote on the tentative agreement with SAHO and the health regions.
