Greetings Sisters and Brothers,

Your bargaining team met with the employer’s representatives on March 30th, 31st and April 1st, last week. This was our first set of meetings in an effort to negotiate improvements to your collective agreements.

Things went quite well over the first two days. We made substantial improvements to the language, obtaining all the amendments made for our members at the Marian Chateau and the Bentley units in Saskatoon and Yorkton plus additional language changes. On the third day, we presented our monetary package which included items such as improvements to sick leave, vacation leave, shift and weekend premiums as well as increases for wage rates.

We had proposals to bring the rates of pay and the term of the agreements in line with those at the Marian Chateau, Saskatoon and Yorkton units. We made some progress on these issues but at the end of the day the Employer refused to move further, ended our meeting and walked out. he last offer we had presented was by no means our final position. We knew we still had room for movement. The Employer choose to simply quit and walk away.

To get the Employer to move and come to a final resolve on your agreements we are asking that you attend a membership meeting for your workplace. We will fully explain our proposals and current position and ask for your support. We need feedback on the outstanding issues. We will also be conducting a strike vote at these meetings.

The meetings are scheduled as follows:

Bentley Moose Jaw – Monday, April 18th – 8:00pm
SEIU-West,
39 Athabasca Street W
Moose Jaw

Bentley Regina – Tuesday, April 19th – 8:00pm
Travelodge Hotel
4177 Albert Street
Regina

It is vitally important that you attend the meeting for your facility as this is your only opportunity to vote on the question of job action.

If you have any questions or concerns about your workplace or your collective agreement, you are encouraged to contact the Member Resource Centre (MRC) at 1-888-999-7348 (follow the prompts). The MRC Officers are able to answer your questions and, if necessary, will forward your concerns to the Union Representative for your workplace.

Your patience, understanding and support as we work through this process is greatly appreciated.

In solidarity,

The SEIU-West/Revera (Regina & Moose Jaw) Bargaining Team:

Melissa Schmidt (Unit Chairperson – Regina) · Barb McBride (Unit Chairperson – Moose Jaw) Staff: Bob Desjarlais (Union Representative) · Kerry Barrett (Negotiations Officer)

REPORT ON BARGAINING December 15, 2013: Revera – The Bentley at Hillsdale

Your bargaining team met with the Employer’s representatives On December 12 & 13 to negotiate the monetary issues.

We are pleased to report that these negotiations have resulted in a tentative agreement.  Your bargaining team will be bringing this tentative agreement out to you for discussion, consideration and a ratification vote.

As you know our goal entering this round of negotiations was to achieve equality with the Employer’s other Regina facility, the Marian Chateau.  We have been successful in bringing both the language of the Collective Agreement and the rates of pay in line with that of the Marian Chateau.  Unfortunately we were not able to get the term of your new Agreement to the same term as the Marian Chateau.

The full details of the settlement will be provided at the meeting to be held on Monday, December 23rd at 8:00 pm in the Dining Room at the Bentley Hillsdale.

Your bargaining team believes this is the best Collective Agreement we can achieve at this time.  We appreciate the support you have provided over the course of these negotiations.  We hope to see you all at the December 23rd meeting.

In solidarity,

Melissa Schmidt, Unit Chairperson, Bentley Hillsdale
Deborah Stead
Charlene McNeill
Suzanne Krause, Unit Chairperson, Bentley Moose Jaw
Bob Desjarlais, Union Representative
Kerry G. Barrett, Negotiations Officer

REPORT ON BARGAINING No. 1: Revera – The Bentley at Hillsdale

Sisters and Brothers:

Your bargaining team met with the Employer’s representatives over the last two days.  As we reported previously, discussions on the non-monetary items has now concluded and we have moved on to the monetary items (i.e. wages and benefits).

It has long been our position that all of the Unionized Revera properties should provide the same wages and benefits for their employees.  We moved towards this goal…

Media Release: New Members Form Union with SEIU-West

For Immediate Release – September 19, 2012

Saskatoon – The Union members employed at Marion Chateau in Regina, the Bentley in Saskatoon and the Bentley in Yorkton all gave resounding support to their bargaining teams by voting in favour of tentative collective agreements last week. These are the first collective agreements with their employer Revera Retirement Communities.

The contracts achieved the Union’s goal of equal benefits and treatment for these workers compared to those workers employed with the same employer and affiliated with the same union at the Bentley Hillsdale in Regina and the Bentley in Moose Jaw.

“We made significant gains in getting this employer to recognize that this is really just one workplace,” said Kerry Barrett, Lead Negotiator. “It does not matter if you work in Yorkton; you deserve the same benefits and protections as your co-workers in Regina.”

The one area where there was no movement was equal rates of pay. “It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t get there with this contract but I think the gains we’ve made are a good start and will improve the workplace for everyone involved. Our members look forward to fostering an even stronger relationship with their Employer over the life of this contract,” continued Barrett.

Each facility employs between 25 and 30 workers. Some workers prepare and serve meals to the residents; others do housekeeping and laundry duties, as well as, transport residents to appointments and other personal activities within their communities.

“We look forward to continuing our support of these new members as they shape their workplace and become more confident in their abilities as Union leaders,” said Barbara Cape, President of SEIU-West. “We are proud of our newest SEIU-West members. In a very short time they have accomplished a great deal by working together. It is obvious that they see the value of forming a union to improve both their working lives and their future.”

SEIU-West represents over twelve thousand working people in the province of Saskatchewan. They include members who work in healthcare, education, municipalities, community-based organizations, retirement homes and other sectors.
