The SEIU-West 2025 Convention was held at the Delta Downtown Saskatoon on May 27, 28, and 29. Delegates who represented units from across Saskatchewan came together to make decisions on the future of our Union and were united under the theme of Build Worker Power!

At this convention, the delegates not only voted on changes to the constitution, but they also selected who they wanted to represent them as their President, Treasurer, one Trustee, and seven Members-at-Large in three caucuses.  Each term is four years, unless otherwise noted. Rest assured that normal operations will remain in place as we work to get our new board members up to speed.

We offer our thanks and appreciation to Terrilyn Schleper, who did not seek re-election on the Executive Board, as well as to Jae Anderson, Wolana Fox, Mariann Marcia, and Yolanda Sagayo who served on the Executive Board for a two year term as representatives for the Gender & Sexual Diversity, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit, Workers of Colour, and Young Worker communities.

In addition to elections, delegates voted in favour of a constitutional amendment which gave an additional Executive Board seat to the former Heartland Health Region, in recognition of growing membership within that region. Once this change is approved by SEIU International, we will open an Expression of Interest to fill this seat.

Our convention opened with a blessing by Elder Joseph Naytowhow, followed by greetings from the City of Saskatoon delivered by Ward 2 Councillor Senos Timon, as well as the Saskatoon and District Labour Council President Don MacDonald. Throughout the convention, our speakers clearly embraced our Build Worker Power theme and reinforced the need for workers to come together to create change. We were delighted to have Samantha Becotte President, Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation, Larry Rousseau Executive Vice President, Canadian Labour Congress, Leslie Frane Executive Vice President, SEIU, Lori Johb President, Saskatchewan Federation of Labour, and Nathaniel Teed, Shadow Minister for Labour, NDP Caucus.

Presentations by SEIU-West staff departments were excellent and provided interesting and relevant information and data to the delegates in attendance. Included in these presentations was the Year in Review video spanning time since 2023's Convention.

More than 200 delegates and guests attended an info picket at Saskatoon City Hospital, in support of frontline healthcare workers who have been without a contract for more than two years.

Finally, this convention also had us bidding farewell to Barbara Cape who announced her intention not to seek reelection as President of SEIU-West in March 2025. Tributes to Barb were made over the course of the convention, during the banquet and the event ended with a show of signs of gratitude for her service to the members of SEIU-West. While we will miss Barb and her leadership and we know that she has built a strong foundation on which we can grow worker power and move forward together.
