On February 10, 2022 Extendicare Canada announced it was selling its Esprit Lifestyle division to Sienna-Sabra LP, a partnership between the US company SABRA Healthcare REIT and the Canadian company Sienna Senior Living.
Sienna will operate and manage the Esprit facilities. This includes three facilities represented by SEIU-west – Riverbend Crossing, Stonebridge Crossing, and West Park Crossing – as well as a fourth facility in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. The sale is also subject to regulatory approval. According to correspondence put out by Sienna Senior Living to investors, the sale is expected to be completed by the end of June, 2022.
Extendicare has notified the Union that collective bargaining would be suspended while the Employer bargaining committees sought further instructions from the Employer. Since then, there has been no additional information provided by Extendicare.
What we do know is that labour legislation in Saskatchewan sets out successorship laws which ensure that SEIU-West will still be your union and we continue to represent you, no matter who the new employer is. SEIU-West continues to investigate these developments. We have filed access to information requests which are beginning to yield results. We will continue to advocate strongly with the employers and government to ensure that our members’ rights are protected and that all legal commitments are met.
