The First Nations, Métis and Inuit Committee (FNMIC) wants to thank our SEIU-West members, committees and the greater community for their donations to our necessities drive to support houseless folks.

Last week, they met with The Saskatoon and Area United Way and several Members of the Legislature Assembly of Saskatchewan to discuss the houseless crisis we see across this province. While this issue is complex, it also isn't. Saskatchewan winters are harsh and folks need a safe place to call home.

The changes to the Saskatchewan Income Support program several years ago have had a negative impact and there is a huge amount of public support to reverse these changes yet change eludes Saskatchewan.

FNMIC members have reached out to our members and to community businesses and other unions to assist with a campaign to fill dry bags with necessities. They stuffed 148 backpacks and hit the streets to support folks that are experiencing houselessness.

You can help by:

  • contacting your MLA to demand better - we can build more social housing, reverse the SIS changes, and offer supports to those with substance use disorders
  • contacting your local housing authority to ask them to fix up/ fill the thousands of vacant public units across this province
  • starting a donation drive at your workplace for our next backpack drive in October 2026
