SEIU-West is proud to celebrate Health Information Professionals Week March 22-28, 2020!
We talked to Sherry, one of our SEIU-West Health Information Management Practitioner (HIMP) members to find out more about her role in our public health care system.
In order to work as a HIMP at an urban Saskatchewan hospital, Sherry completed the two year HIMP course through Saskatchewan Polytechnic. A memorable moment for Sherry was during her practicum was when she was able to promote her profession and what they do because most people don’t understand what their job entails.
To do this job, Sherry has to be an expert at abbreviation and medical terminology. She takes charts and creates codes for visit history, demographics, and diagnosis. That data is then used for statistics to plan needed resources for the health care team. The information she provides can help to determine the need for specialists, for example.
We are proud to celebrate the health care heroes that are Health Information Professionals and their vital role in making sure our health care system runs smoothly.
