May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.

In 2004, this date was chosen in honour of May 17, 1990. This is the date in which the World Health Organization made the concrete decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
Even in 2026, the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities continue to face discrimination, harassment, and violence while fighting for their basic rights. There is a shockingly low percentage of these cases being reported from the queer community. One way we can assist is by education and speaking up.
To honour the progress that has been made internationally and at home, the Gender and Sexual Diversity Committee would like to ask a few questions based on your experiences surrounding these issues. Entries will be eligible to win a committee t-shirt and water bottle. Entries must be submitted no later than Friday May 22 at 5pm to be considered for the prize. Winner will be selected by the committee and notified by email. Prize will be available for pick up at one of the three SEIU-West offices.
