Saskatchewan—SEIU-West members continue to identify massive issues with the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s (SHA’s) new Administrative Information Management System (AIMS).

SHA leaders promised that AIMS would seamlessly and efficiently combine the SHA’s data systems. After years of delays and false starts, AIMS went live in July… and the cracks are showing.

“AIMS has been an expensive failure,” says Barbara Cape, President of SEIU-West. “It’s hurting patient care, and it’s hurting the workers who provide that care.”

Frontline staff are unable to order vital supplies, resulting in operating rooms critically short of joint replacements and sutures, and long-term care facilities running out of adult incontinence products.

SEIU-West members report that they are not being paid properly if they are paid at all. Members working in the payroll department face huge backlogs and understaffing, and don’t have the full AIMS access they need to try to get workers paid on time. Workers are struggling with a lack of orientation and access to the new system for their own employee profile but also the tools to do their job.

“We keep asking the SHA for information about how these problems are being addressed, to no avail,” continues Cape. “There has been very little communication with healthcare workers who have been impacted, and no increase in staff to address the problems.”

“We need oversight and accountability for the millions of dollars that are being spent on this process—we need the Ombudsman or the Provincial Auditor to conduct a full inquiry into this situation as soon as possible.”

Service Employees International Union West (SEIU-West) represents over 13,000 people across Saskatchewan. They include people who work in health care, education, municipalities, community-based organizations, retirement homes, and other sectors.
