On May 8, 2024 the Saskatoon office hosted the SEIU-West Family of Nursing Conference. Sponsored by the Nursing Care Committee (NCC), this conference is held every two years to celebrate the work of the members of our Family of Nursing: Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and other SEIU-West members in similar hands-on care roles in personal care homes and group homes, such as Direct Support Workers and Direct Care Providers. The conference was originally scheduled for last October, but was postponed due to bad weather.

The conference theme was “Caring for the Caregivers”, and in the spirit of that theme the 40 members in attendance learned how to use laughter to relieve stress and bond with coworkers, and how to respond safely and effectively to sexual harassment in the workplace. They were engaged and informed by presentations on workplace burnout in nursing, and on the programs and services of Saskatoon’s Prairie Harm Reduction. And as in previous editions of this conference, there was a lively and moving member panel session in which members shared their stories and concerns about life on the front lines of care.

The feedback from the members who attended has been very positive:

I loved the variety of speakers and activities. This is my first union event and it did not disappoint.

Impressed with all the information and learning I will take home with me today.

The day was great. Very happy I was chosen to attend. Loved how empowered we feel leaving union functions.

It was a great initiative for us to come together and try to make things better and also be more educated.

I would attend again, and inform others.

Congratulations to the NCC and staff for putting this conference together.
