Resilience and Women: Elmwood Group Homes Support Workers

The SEIU-West Young Workers Committee (YWC) are excited to offer two tickets to attend Women Leading the Way Luncheon at the Remai Modern – Riverview Room on May 29. The United Way of Saskatoon and Area is organizing and has special guest, Dawn Dumont, speaking to the theme of Resilience and Women.

Resilience and Women is a timely topic for our communities and union. At Elmwood Group Homes (EGH), the majority of the Support Workers taking job action are women, and many are women of colour. We must therefore recognize that their struggle is not only an issue of fairness, it’s a gendered and racial issue as well. BSI-20180501-leading-the-way

Their solidarity in this ten week struggle is an act of resilience, and we admire their strength in fighting for a woman’s right to fair pay. The incredible women at EGH who are standing up for their right to a fair wage are not only standing up for themselves, but for women and racialized women everywhere.

Many of the women who work as Support Workers at EGH are single mothers, yet their employer is not recognizing their need to support themselves and their families. This is outrageous. And four years without a pay increase should put their employer to shame. Too often, employers will take advantage of our most oppressed communities and we cannot allow that to happen.

The YWC want to help ensure the workers at EGH reach a fair deal – so they’re offering the two tickets to the Women Leading the Way Luncheon to members who send a letter of support this week – just visit this link and click participate! If you’ve already sent a letter of support, please send an email to [email protected] stating why you support the women at EGH. Ever better? Turn your statement into a photo – bonus points for selfies!
