Greetings Sisters and Brothers,

Our last update indicated the Union and the Employer reached an impasse in bargaining in the summer of 2019, after the membership voted to reject the Employer’s last offer of a 1.5% wage increase effective July 1, 2019, with no provision for retroactive pay.

The parties met for conciliation in November 2019 and although efforts were made to resolve collective bargaining, an agreement continued to elude the parties. After conciliation the Employer’s representative met with the Union’s representative to continue to work toward a resolution and made progress but did not reach agreement. Your bargaining committee decided to consult with you the members to determine next steps. The bargaining committee met with the membership on December 5th. There was a constructive exchange of views and information and the membership provided its approval of our next steps.

The Union bargaining committee confirmed the Employer is proposing a Memorandum of Settlement which includes a pay increase of 1.5% retroactive to July 1, 2019 and a 0.5% increase effective on July 1, 2020. All the non-monetary changes to the agreement that were reached during collective bargaining will be maintained. The Union bargaining committee indicated its agreement to the Memorandum of Settlement and that it would be taken to the membership.

The Union is therefore planning to present a Tentative Agreement (TA) to the membership, with a recommendation to accept, for ratification in the week of the January 6, 2020. There will be an information and ratification meeting on the January 6, 2020 at 4:45 p.m. at the YWCA.

Full details of what is being recommended will be shared with the members at the meeting and all questions will be answered. Members will be able to vote on the TA at the meeting as well as throughout the week of January 6 – this week was chosen to allow all those members who are away over the Christmas holidays to return in time for the information meeting and to vote.
