SEIU-West is proud to share the incredible achievement of three members as a result of their bravery and quick action in a dangerous situation.
In the early hours of February 12, 2022, Protective Services Officer Nolin approached a man outside the Emergency Department of St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon. After a brief interaction, the man produced a grenade. PSO Nolin and PSO Melnychuk, who had arrived to support PSO Nolin, sprang to action to subdue and disarm the man. With additional assistance from PSO Martin, the grenade was secured and the man detained until Saskatoon Police Services Officers arrived on scene.
When faced with such a dangerous situation, these members acted bravely to protect the patients, visitors, and staff at the hospital without a second thought. Both PSO Nolin and PSO Melnychuk were injured during the incident.
These medals and recognition are very well deserved and we thank you for your continued dedication to providing safe healthcare spaces for the citizens of Saskatchewan.
Congratulations on this incredible honour.
Since 1894, the Royal Canadian Humane Association has recognized acts of heroism by Canadians in civilian life, who, through their alertness, skill, and concern, save or attempt to save a life, especially where those actions lie outside the ordinary duties of the person involved.
