Virtual town halls (VTHs) were scheduled for the evenings of May 27 and 28 to update SEIU-West members about SAHO bargaining and answer bargaining questions. Unfortunately, the VTH on May 27 ran into major technical glitches. We apologize if you were one of the hundreds of members whose experienced this failure. We were not satisfied that the supplier of the VTH platform would be able to properly fix these problems in time, so we decided to cancel the May 28 VTH.
You may have noticed there hasn't been an announcement about bbqs for the summer yet.
The SEIU-West First Nations, Métis and Inuit Committee (FNMIC) is hosting a contest to design an image for orange shirts that the committee provides yearly to members. Submit your design to enter to win a $100 Co-op gift card.

It’s May Day AKA International Workers’ Day!
Today is a day when we celebrate the achievements of labourers and working class people across the globe. This is a good time for us to pause and reflect on our achievements and also ponder what we could achieve if we keep striving for fairness together.
Janice has worked for 22 years in the health care field; most recently, she works in a long term care facility as an ELFSW (Environmental, Laundry, Food Services Worker). If you think her work involves a lot of juggling, you’re right.
Amidst these trying times, it seems fitting that SEIU-West recognize both Occupational Health & Safety Week (May 2 to 8) and Mental Health Week (May 3 to 9) simultaneously this year.
The volatile and unpredictable situations that you have worked and lived over the course of 2020 and 2021, has come at a great expense physically, and mentally.
However, there is light.
There are resources to support every one of you, both in and outside of your workplace. You need only reach out.

As a Union, we rely on the specialists in the field of OH&S and Mental Health, to help guide our support and education of Members. Through the Canadian Mental Health Association website, Members will find an abundance of helpful resources.
Another resource is the United Way’s initiative, Saskatchewan 211 – you can call or text 211, they offer live chat as well. Not only can they link you with mental health services in your community but other services as well.
The SEIU-West Worker Safety Committee has also chosen to participate in a very special campaign, supporting people who have lost loved ones, through their participation in this year’s Threads for Life campaign. More information can be found here.
SEIU-West is also proud to employ staff who have been trained in Mental Health First Aid, in order to be properly equipped to provide support to you as Members. In addition to this, we continue to educate Members, on the important issues related to Occupational Health and Safety, ensuring that we incorporate Mental Health issues solidly in our course materials. (Saskatchewan) SGEU, SEIU-West and CUPE – three Saskatchewan unions representing health care providers – are reminding Premier Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) about their unfulfilled promise made in August 2020 to recruit 73 positions in the provincial lab system for added capacity to assist with the ongoing strains of COVID.
Melanie works in an urban long term care facility within both the Laundry and Housekeeping departments.
Sayful is a member of SEIU-West, and a founding member of the Multicultural Mentorship Committee (MMC) of the local. MMC works and advocates for all different ethnic backgrounds of members who work within Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and other employers affiliated with SEIU- West.
