Period poverty describes the struggle faced by women and girls who cannot afford the cost of menstrual products, like pads or tampons.

Having a period is a regular occurrence for 50% of the population; however for those who cannot afford basic sanitary supplies, it can become a monthly ordeal that limits their ability to go to school or work. Access to period products is necessary for sanitary reasons, as well as basic human dignity, yet 1 in 3 Canadian women have sacrificed something else to buy pads or tampons.
Once again, we are encouraging SEIU-West members to collect donations of new, unopened pads, tampons, or menstrual cups for this important cause and as always, we're offering up a contest to those who participate! Here are the details:
- Set up a collection box at your workplace. Print a copy of this poster for the box and encourage your co-workers to participate!
- Drop off your donations at any SEIU-West office, and be sure to let the friendly folks at the front desk know your name and unit so you can be entered in the draw.
- If you can't get to a SEIU-West office, you can deliver your donations to a shelter or program in your community. Snap a photo and send it to us at [email protected] to be entered.
- The deadline for donations is March 21.
- The winner will be selected by random draw.
One lucky group will win a Period Party! Your friendly SEIU-West Political Action & Education Department staffers will work with you and your unit executive to host a Period Poverty presentation and discussion. We'll bring snacks, treats, and facilitate a conversation on all things menstruation, while learning about the impacts of period poverty right here in our own communities. Previous participants have given this presentation glowing reviews, it's fun, casual, and informative.
All donated products which are delivered to our offices will be distributed within their own community.
- Saskatoon office donations will be divided evenly between United Way and Moon Time Connections
- Swift Current office donations will be donated to Southwest Crisis Services
- Moose Jaw office donations will be divided evenly between Moose Jaw Transitions House and John Howard Society
