Key Found: Doors to Variety Place Finally Unlocked!

Outlook – The Direct Care Workers (DCWs) of Variety Place in Outlook are finally back to work after being locked out by their employer for 11 weeks.
“We look forward to catching up with our participants and residents,” said Carmela Verwimp, SEIU-West Unit Chair of Variety Place. “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen them and we hope that they are doing well and are excited to get back to normal.”
SEIU-West members were locked out by Variety Place management on May 21, 2017. On July 28, 2017 at 2:22 pm, the ballot count to accept a fair general wage increase was confirmed and forced the Employer to end the lock out. The DCWs were back to work on Sunday July 30, 2017 at 2:22 pm.
“There are still some Occupational Health & Safety concerns that need to be resolved but our members remain hopeful that they can be worked out with the employer,” said Barbara Cape, President of SEIU-West. “We are glad that this impasse has been resolved and we are thankful for all support our members received from their local community and the broader Labour movement.”
