As 2024 winds to a close and the excitement and anticipation of holiday celebrations across many different faiths and cultures ramps up, I wanted to take a moment to share thanks.

Without a doubt it has been a tough year for working people. The cost of living has impacted all of us exceptionally hard and difficult choices are made: whether to take on a second (or third job); watching our money closer; foregoing those modest joys like a movie or things for your family; whether there is an extra three days of food in the house so we can pay rent or the mortgage. We’ve heard from so many members across the province sharing their struggles and growing frustration. I’m not thankful for an inflationary crisis on the heals of a global pandemic and the division and rancor that has impacted our families and friends.

What I ask that you reflect on is the incredible work that you have done every single day in your workplaces and in your life. Because I am thankful for the dignity and integrity that you have approached public services and the care you provide. You have done quality work in every facet of your job – whether you are making glass beads; preparing meals; assisting in the OR or the ER; keeping people warm, safe and secure in your towns or facilities; or managing the administrative functions that keep our healthcare, education, towns, cities and facilities up and running.

SEIU-West members are as diverse a group of members there is.  You are engaged and active and help put unity and solidarity in every thing we do.  You ask tough questions and are not afraid to confront the difficult issues.  You are, quite simply, amazing.

On behalf of SEIU-West staff, Executive Board and member leaders across this province, I thank you for making this province a better and more hopeful place for everyone. We thank you for deciding to build a better union for each other. We thank you for your large and small acts of kindness in the community and in your workplace.  In this season of hope, you are our north star.

All the best to you and your families and friends this holiday season.

With respect and solidarity,

Barbara Cape, President
SEIU-West
