MEMBER HELPS TRANSLATE FLYER
PROCats have been asking UCats to come out and engage with the community to talk about our chronic understaffing issues.
We recently had a UCat who asked if she could work with us to translate our end understaffing flyer into Tagalog (a Filipino dialect). The Political Action and Education Department worked with her to get the flyer into her hands so she could continue the great work in reaching out to communities so that everyone is aware of the short staffing crisis in healthcare.

Workers Granted Official Certification Order!
Back in May 2019, the organizing department of SEIU-West filed to certify the workers at Saskatoon Twin Charities-City Centre Bingo.
The union vote occurred and the ballot box was sealed pending the outcome of several disagreements between SEIU-West and the Employer.
On December 12, 2019, we received notice that the Employer’s Objection to the Conduct of the Vote was dismissed and that these workers were finally granted their official Certification Order! Our newest members voted in favour of joining SEIU-West and now they will begin to experience the benefits of certification!
A great first step in the journey towards securing a first collective agreement!
A twist on the classic "12 Days of Christmas", performed by members of SEIU-West! Remember to remind your provincial government to put care first and be fair to those who care. From all of us at SEIU-West, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The SEIU-West Education Committee is pleased to announce that all of the 2019 Scholarship Winners have been awarded and the winners have been notified.
Each year, the quality of the applications makes the selection process difficult. The committee wants to thank everyone who applied in 2019.
Here are some of our happy winners!
Applications for 2020 will open soon!
FACT CHECK
SEIU-West/SAHO Votes for Job Action!
Members of the SEIU-West/SAHO have voted to take a stand through a very strong YES vote in favour of a Job Action Mandate. Since the last collective agreement expired in March 2017, this move puts members in a stronger bargaining position.
Responses from members on Facebook included;
“Beyond Excited. Let's do this.”
“So proud of my co-workers across the province for standing up for themselves. Thank you to the Bargaining Committee for hanging in there to protect our rights.”
“About time we can finally get something done! Way to go everyone! We came together!!”
SEIU-West will continue to fight for a fair and reasonable tentative agreement that is satisfactory to our members.
With the holiday season approaching, SEIU-West wants to remind our members to call 211 or reach out to your EFAP (Employee Family Assistance Program) – look for EFAP pamphlets in your workplace – if you or a loved one are experiencing mental health issues or need other kinds of assistance.
If you think you or a loved one might need help but are not in a crisis situation, you can access information on www.sk.211.ca which will connect you with community services in your area.
We encourage you to seek help when you need it and of course in an emergency dial 9-1-1.
Take care of yourselves and each other.
SEIU-West is proud to be a union that supports and lives by social unionism – we understand our role is not just to improve the working lives of our members, but to improve the communities in which we live as well.
In that sense, we strive to support and get involved in community events and organizations striving for social justice. It is our members that lead the way – they volunteer, organize, and get involved in both their union and communities every day – in other words, Purple Works in Our Communities!
In recognition of the member volunteering, we held a contest to highlight this important work over the summer – check out this statement from our winner Julie:
I have been a board member volunteer for about 14 years in Naicam and I help run our community thrift store with about eight other board members and approximately 40 volunteers. The money raised will go to projects such as the school music program, the playground summer program, the STARS air ambulance, and communities in bloom among others. We sell gently used items and we sort and organize our store. We are very proud of our community thrift store. If you are ever out this way stop in for a look and cup of coffee!
