June is National Indigenous Peoples Month. This is a time to honour the rich history, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. It is an opportunity to reflect on historical and current injustices and commit to true reconciliation in Canada.
The First Nations, Métis and Inuit Committee would like to share some events and resources with you and encourage you to participate in events in your area.
SEIU-West is hosting our first Asian Pacific Islander Summit in Saskatoon on September 24-26, 2026 — an event to bring together workers from across Canada and the U.S.

The SEIU-West First Nations, Métis and Inuit Committee (FNMIC) is hosting a contest to design an image for orange shirts that the committee provides yearly to members. Submit your design to enter to win a $100 Co-op gift card.
The Municipal Employees’ Pension Commission (MEPC, the Commission) met on April 21, 2023. The Commission met with the Municipal Employees’ Pension Plan’s (MEPP, the Plan) actuary and approved the assumptions to be used in the management valuation of MEPP as at December 31, 2022.
The Annual Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) Summer Camp will be held on August 19-25 at Shekinah Retreat Centre, near Waldheim.
May 14 - 20 is National Biomedical and Clinical Engineering Week. This is a week to recognize the contributions of the Biomedical Engineers, Clinical Engineers, Biomedical Engineering Technicians and Technologists who make valuable contributions to healthcare institutions in the areas of patient safety, research and development, technology management, equipment services, cost savings, problem solving, planning and support. They work to assemble, install, repair, calibrate, and inspect biomedical equipment and devices to ensure that it meets standards.

For years, SEIU-West has marched in pride parades. As a union, we celebrate and fight for equality and diversity. This year, you can join SEIU-West's Gender and Sexual Diversity Committee (GSDC) in the parade!
The committee members would love for you to walk with them in solidarity on:
- June 10th in Regina. Parade begins at 12:00pm.
- June 17th in Saskatoon. Parade begins at 1:00pm. We are at 5J.
- July 8th in Swift Current (Parade begins at 12:00pm, starting in Market Square (corner of Chaplin St E and Central Ave).

May 8 – 14 is National Nursing Week. The theme for 2023 is Our Nurses. Our Future. This theme is meant to showcase the many roles that nurses play in a patient’s health care journey, and to shine a light on the courage and commitment shown by nurses throughout the pandemic, and each and every day that they go to work.

The SEIU-West Education Committee sponsored four members to attend the SFL Spring School and the members that attended were excited to share their reports as follows:
Tending to the needs of others is a skill not all of us possess. Thankfully, those who have those skills often find themselves in roles where they provide care to people—patients, clients, residents, and participants—who need their expertise.
SEIU-West is pleased to sponsor up to 2 members to attend the Moose Jaw & District Labour Council's 2023 Annual General Meeting June 6, 2023.
If you would like to attend, your completed Expression of Interest form must be received in our office on or before May 10, 2023 in order to allow us to complete the selection process.
SEIU-West will cover the cost of lost wages, meals, mileage and/or honoraria as applicable for the successful delegates.
May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. This is an important day, as families and loved ones of women and girls who have been murdered, or are currently missing, remember their sisters, mothers, daughters, aunties, and friends. This day is often called Red Dress Day, in recognition of the Red Dress Project. The following was submitted by SEIU-West member by Freda Weeseekase.
