The SEIU-West First Nations Métis Inuit Committee (FNMIC) would like to share some upcoming events and invite you to join in celebrating our first peoples across Turtle Island. FNMIC members will be at the Rock your Roots Walk for Reconciliation on June 21st. Join us in your cultural attire or orange shirts to honour the Residential School Survivors.

Would you like to learn about First Nations, Métis or Inuit cultural teachings? Check out the Create to Learn website!

Whether you attend an event in your community, learn how to pronounce the territorial name of the land on which you live, or consider the sacred importance of land, we hope that you take some time to learn about the history of the place you live, and strive to learn something new about the culture, history, or language of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples.

Recently the First Nations Métis Inuit Committee went to the first ever Taking Care Together: Aging into Well-Being, A Métis Health Conference. They invited a member to join them and were eager to provide their insight as Health Care Professionals, as well as gain insight into how we can do better as a Health Care System.  These are their reports:

The First Nations Métis Inuit committee is pleased to sponsor one (1) member to join them at the conference: Taking Care Together: Aging Into Well-Being, a Métis Health Conference being held at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon (Hall A) on February 2 and 3, 2024.

SEIU-West First Nations Métis Inuit Committee is pleased to offer yearly scholarships for members who are Status Indian, Non-Status Indian, Inuit or Métis who are in good standing (dues paying members) that are taking a class in a College, University or recognized Tech or Vocational Post-Secondary School for the year they are applying in.
Applications must be received by November 15th and include: proof of registrationreceipt of payment and an essay on "How can the labour movement be an ally with First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples?”

Apply here.

In order to ensure as many people benefit from this program as possible, if you have won an SEIU-West Scholarship within the past three years, you will not be considered.

May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. This is an important day, as families and loved ones of women and girls who have been murdered, or are currently missing, remember their sisters, mothers, daughters, aunties, and friends. This day is often called Red Dress Day, in recognition of the Red Dress Project. The following was submitted by SEIU-West member by Freda Weeseekase.
